Affiliate Marketing

How to Attract Poker Gaming Visitors 101

The poker affiliate business can be a very profitable one, but that profitability is a double-edged sword, as it also means that the field is very competitive as well.

If you want to grab some of the poker affiliate gold floating around you’ll have to be on top of your game as far as building great sites that attract and convert visitors interested in online poker.

Following the tips below will get you off to a great start as a poker affiliate, and give you a great foundation to start building your online gaming affiliate empire.

Find a Niche

In the early days of the poker affiliate world (in the late 1990s and early 2000s) there was much less competition from other affiliates, so simply having a site related to poker with some decent general content on it (poker rules, bios of famous players, strategy articles, etc.) was more than enough to succeed in the poker affiliate game.

That’s not true these days, though, as the poker affiliate world has become hyper-competitive and increasingly dominated by a handful of very successful affiliate sites.

If you want to succeed in today’s tough poker affiliate scene, you need to find a niche that other sites aren’t serving. Instead of creating a general purpose poker site, focus your efforts on a  slice of it, such as a site devoted to juicy poker gossip, or one that tracks the action at the highest online stakes, or a site that is devoted solely to famous female poker pros.

Or do all three, launching a variety of smaller, independent poker affiliate sites devoted to different niches.

Specializing your sites not only lets you effectively compete with larger established affiliate sites but it also diversifies your efforts and doesn’t put all of your eggs in a single basket.

Don’t Put All of Your Eggs in One Basket

Not only is diversity good as far as the types of content you write and sites you create, but it also applies to the poker affiliate programs you promote on your sites.

If you promote a variety of programs you stand a better chance of attracting more visitors and traffic to your sites, as many Web visitors will find your site via search engines when they’re looking for a particular site they’ve heard of.

Promoting a variety of programs such as the Party Poker affiliate program, the Full Tilt affiate program, and the Titan Poker affiliate program will give you the best chance to attract a wide swath of visitors to you site.

In addition to helping you gain visitors, promoting multiple programs can also help you on the business side of the ledger, as you’ll be less impacted by things such as changing laws and other external changes beyond your control.

The passage of the UIGEA in 2006 in the US greatly reduced the amount of money Party Poker affiliates made virtually overnight, so if you solely promoted the Party Poker program, you’d have been devastated.

Full Tilt, however, decided to stay in the US market, so Full Tilt Poker affiliates actually saw an increase in business. Putting your eggs in multiple baskets and promoting both programs would have caused much less impact on your business as a poker affiliate.

Content is King but SEO Helps

The best way to attract poker gaming visitors is simple and straightforward: provide lots of great content that they’re looking for. There are many avenues you can go down as far as content for your poker affiliate sites.

Including bios of famous players, coverage of online and offline poker tournaments, strategy tips, guides to creating and funding online poker accounts, poker site reviews, rules for various games, interviews with famous players, hot gossip from the poker world, and forums where visitors can post their own content.

If you’re trying to get people who are interested in getting started with online poker to your site, reverse the roles and put yourself in their shoes.

What are they likely to be interested in? What would they likely search for in Google or even Bing?

What questions or concerns do they have, as far as whether online poker is safe or legal? Your goal, then, is to provide the answers to all of that, in the content that you put on your sites.

While content is king, you also need to have a good understanding of search engine optimization (SEO), as the best of content can be lost in the shuffle if you don’t follow good basic SEO practices.

Part of your job as a successful poker affiliate is to know about SEO, and there are plenty of dedicated online sites and forums that can help you stay abreast of the best practices in SEO for your sites.
