Interview with a successful client of SnapNames
SnapNames.com is one of the largest auction domain services when it comes to domain names that are soon to be expired. What they do is to auction off these domains to the highest bidder. SnapNames offer an extensive list of domain names.
“There’s a lot of money to make as affiliate to SnapNames and similar companies. Considering that many of these domain names are auctioned off for thousands of dollars (if not millions) and you get a part of it you’ll be sure to make a fine income”
Most of its clients are private persons or people running small businesses. To find a domain name you simply type in the keyword that’s important to you and you’ll get a list of domain names that are similar or identical to the one you want. You have the possibility to subscribe to these lists, making it impossible for you to miss a great name.
It’s important to know that even though a domain name is listed at SnapNames.com it’s not absolutely certain that it will be auctioned off. An owner of a domain name has the possibility to retain their domain if they pay the fee within three months after the expiration date.
Now why is all of this important for you as an affiliate? Well there’s a lot of money to make as affiliate to SnapNames and similar companies. Considering that many of these domain names are auctioned off for thousands of dollars (if not millions) and you get a part of it you’ll be sure to make a fine income
To learn more about this widespread phenomenon we met up with a successful client of SnapNames.
Can you tell us a bit about SnapNames.com?
Well I know that there are people who make their living through SnapNames and similar sites. We call these people domainers. What these domainers do is buy domain names which they think will be popular in the future and they “park them”. After a couple a years they sell their domain names to the highest bidder, making a killing. People have made millions of dollar selling domain names.
What should one think about when buying a domain name?
A good domain name is not only of value to the one selling but also for the one buying it. If you for example have a company specializing in water balloons you probably should choose a domain name with the word balloon in it. You want a name which represents your company and what it stands for. There is a lack of good domain names to choose between since so many already are taken. If you find a top name, don’t let go of it. Or of course you can you do just that if you simply want to make money of the name itself.
What kind of names do they provide?
SnapNames.com only list domain names that already exists and which are soon to be expired. You won’t find any new names here. You can find any type of TLD (Top Level Domain) on this site, as well as on similar sites. Generic TLDs aren’t as popular as “normal” TLDs. As always there are exceptions, in this case .info which can be used in combination with for example affiliate.info – making it quite popular.
How do these auctions work?
How it works is that you for example register your VISA and let SnapNames know how much you are willing to pay if they find a name that matches your keywords. If they find one and it’s within your budget they buy it for you meaning that auctions might not always be “live-auctions”.
Do you know of any other popular company offering this service?
Yes, there is a company called SEDO. It’s not exactly the same since they more have the role of a broker for domain names. They sell both new and old domain names. If you want a domain name that already is taken you can contact SEDO, and they will help you to try and negotiate in your favor. Of course they do this for a fee but maybe they can help you get that oh so important domain name. Another company that I know of that is supposed to be good is DeletedDomains.com.
Do you think there’s any money to make as an affiliate within this segment?
Yes, I’m sure of it! You get a commission of the sales your referrals generate and there are thousands of auctions every day. If you become an affiliate to companies such as SnapNames, SEDO or DeletedDomains I’m sure you’ll make a fine income. It’s much better to be an affiliate to these companies than say GoDaddy.com which sell new domain names for a small amount of money. Your commission will be greater with the first mentioned companies.
