Interview with Affiliate Summit Shawn Collins!

After 5 years of leading the most popular and well-visited affiliate conference in the world, Affiliate Summit co-creator Shawn Collins sits down for a chat with AffiliateTips.com’s own Joshua Simmons. Much like the rest of us Shawn started out as an affiliate and today tells us a story of true affiliate success.

“In the early days, I was able to dig myself out of debt with affiliate marketing in my spare time, which was very significant to me.”

When & Why did you start with affiliate marketing

I started in 1997 with the Amazon affiliate program to help pay the bills.

For how long have you been working with affiliate marketing?

In 1997, I started as both an affiliate and an affiliate manager.

Tell us about your first affiliate project.

I was producing a print zine on my adventures in New York City and I took it online. I initially joined the Amazon affiliate program to feature relevant books, and later added other programs.

What do you consider your most successful affiliate achievement?

In the early days, I was able to dig myself out of debt with affiliate marketing in my spare time, which was very significant to me. Since then, I’ve never carried a credit card balance or otherwise had any debt, thanks to affiliate earnings.

How did you end up working with Affiliate Summit?

I was unhappy with the direction of a conference called Affiliate Force, so I partnered with Missy Ward to launch Affiliate Summit in 2003 to create a conference the way we thought it should be.

How has Affiliate Summit 2008 been so far?

We run two big conferences each year on the east and west coasts of the U.S. In 2008, both events were the biggest to date for their respective coasts. We’re also launching a single day niche series of events this year, and the first one will be on social media on October 5 in NYC.

Any tips on how to become a successful affiliate?

Follow your passion, rather than chasing trends.

What is your view on the affiliate marketing business today?

It’s far more diversified and complex with the use of video, mobile, social media, etc. In the past, affiliate marketing was sort of one dimensional with a focus on banners and text links.

How has affiliate marketing changed since you started out?

It has become a lot more competitive, and the tools are more advanced. There are also a lot more affiliate programs out there – options in every niche – so it’s easier to monetize pretty much any site.

Any additional forecasts for the affiliate marketing industry?

If the U.S. economy does fall into a recession, it should be good for affiliate marketers, as the advertisers get guaranteed returns for their investment. So they’ll drop less effective methods of advertising and focus on affiliate marketing.

Any last advice you want to share with beginner affiliates?

Be patient. It’s not fast or easy, but if you focus and dedicate yourself, you can become a big success.
